trip to New Castle upon Tyne

Went to New Castle, situated in the
North East of England. It has a population of
250,000 but including the surrounding urban area its
population is almost 1 million. Newcastle was founded around 2,000 years ago as a Roman fort. The city has now re-invented itself as a cultural centre and Science City, and is possibly one of the trendiest places in the UK (Wikitravel). We departed at 655am and reached @ 930am, spent 7h there and came back to Glasgow. Managed to visit-->Grainger Market, China Town, St. James Park Stadium, New Castle United Football Club, Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge, High Level Bridge, Millenium Bridge, Monument Mall,Hatton Gallery, Newcastle University, Castle Keep, Black Gate and Moot hall.

recent research progress

This could be a technical post, sorry about that.

I am still using Arabidopsis in my research. other than normal cultivation, here I learn how to identify t-DNA mutant through PCR, and later DNA sequencing as well as perform some cross breed.

Cross breed Arabidopsis is something new to me, and this could be challenging. Basically, we have to open stigma of one plant and stamen (pollen) from another plant, then transfer pollen to the plant’s stigma. Eventually, look at the elongation of silique.

Hope can share some pictures on how I perform crossing.

Finger crossed

Exeter University

After Master degree at Glasgow University, I am pursing PhD degree at Exeter University, situated in Exeter, England, UK. The university established in 1855 (with the foundation of the Exeter School of Art) and gained university status in 1955.

The university has 3 campuses: Streatham, St. Luke’s and Cornwall campuses. Streatham campus is the largest campus in the university.

Exeter is ranked 9th out of more than 100 UK universities in the Times league table. It was the 2007/08 Times Higher Education University of the Year.

It is ranked fourth in the UK for student satisfaction in the latest National Student Survey amongst full service universities.

Areas of research excellence include, in the sciences, translational medicine, climate change and sustainability, systems biology, extrasolar planets and functional materials.

temporary accom@ Glasgow

After moved out from university accommodation at Glasgow University, I stayed in a temporary accommodation, Beerbridge Annex for one week before travel to Exeter. Well, the area, environment is fine, despite the slow internet connection and the location quite far from Glasgow Uni. I share some facilities of this accommodation here. I think Beerbridge Annex is a good choice for those who wish to stay in a budget accomodation when come to Glasgow. In addition, the self-catered facility provided allow us to cook ourselves and save expenses for dining.

temporary accom@ Exeter Uni—>James Owen Court

I arrived at Exeter one week in advance, therefore the university arranged a temporary accommodation for me at James Owen Court, that cost ~£ 130 per week for term-time student. Well, there’s no free lunch in this world, the facilities offered in James Owen Court are great, in comparison with my term-time accommodation that much cheaper..haha
